Things To Do In Copenhagen

Denmark’s capital feels like a metropolis with its vast amount of world-class shopping, culture and nightlife, but is really still small enough to feel safe and easy to explore. Indre By, the “Inner City” is the historic city center with charming alleyways, lovely architecture and lots of great shopping. The perfect way to start getting to know Copenhagen is to climb the Rundetarn, the Round tower, that is one of the city’s most well-known buildings and provides some spectacular views from the very heart of the city. Or try climbing the circular stairs of the church spire of the Church of Our Savior.

Close by is the neighborhood of Christiania, located in an old naval area, which is overall one of Copenhagen’s most singular attractions, with its crooked, brightly colored buildings and easy-going atmosphere. Take a relaxed stroll along the moats parallel to Refshalevej and over the wooden bridge Dyssebroen to get a feel for the almost rural setting. Masted ships and charming canals add to the effect.

City Hall is an impressive building, as is the Frederikskirken, also known as the Marble Church, with its massive dome – one of the largest in northern Europe. The Paustian complex is a trio of buildings worth looking for, and were designed by the same architect who also created the Sydney Opera House, Jørn Utzon. The city’s collection of modernist architecture is world-renowned, and there are many great examples to be found throughout the city, such as the Royal Library (also called the Black Diamond), and the Bellavista residential complex and theater.

The Nationalmuseet in Indre By has a number of interesting exhibits pertaining to Danish history, Vikings, the Inuit, and the Stone Age. The Museum of Copenhagen in Versterbro focuses on the city’s history since the Middle Ages. Frilandsmuseet in the northern part of the city is one of the world’s oldest and largest open-air museums and features more than 100 buildings dating from 1650-1950.

Denmark is of course famous for its strong tradition of design. The Danish Design Center in Indry By is a great place to start, housed in a building designed by Henning Larsen. Nearby is the Design Museum of Denmark and the Royal Copenhagen. The Cisterne on Frederiksberg focuses on modern glass art underneath a large park and Meldahls Smedie on Christianshavn is run by the Royal Danish School of Architecture and displays works by the next generations of Danish designers.

When you take business class flights to Copenhagen in the summertime, be sure to set aside time to visit at least one of the two harbor baths: Copencabana on Veserbro or Havenbadet at Island Brygge on Amager. These are extremely popular with the locals and so will be a great opportunity to really immerse yourself in the local culture. There are also more ‘typical’ beaches close by at Charlottenlund Fort and Amager Strandpark. Another unique feature of Copenhagen are the two amusement parks, Bakken and Tivoli, which happen to be the two oldest functioning amusement parks in the world, containing the two oldest roller coasters.

One of the largest pedestrian malls in the world is Stroget, right by City Hall, and it is usually packed with tourists during the summer and Christmas seasons. For a more local experience, try the narrow side streets surrounding Stroget for a more eclectic experience featuring quirky boutiques and trendy shops. Other good areas are Vesterbrogade and Istedgade on Vesterbro, Vaernedamsvej and Tullinsgade. There are also many flea markets in town, called Loppemarked in Danish.

No visit to Copenhagen is complete without trying out a pølsevogn, or a “sausage wagon”, where you can sample several different types of hot dogs and wash them down with a Cocio cocoa. Another must-try is Torvehallerne, which is a sort of grocery market where you can sample the local foods and have a coffee. For more authentic Danish food, try Schønnemann, Lillian's Smørrebrød, or Höst, to name but a few.

Getting Around Copenhagen

The best way to see Copenhagen is by bike, which is how 40% of the locals get around every day. The city has been designed with cyclists in mind on most major roads, and there are many places where you can rent bikes. Copenhagen has two main transit stations, the Central Station and Nørreport Station. The public transport consists of the S-train, metro and buses. It runs on a zone system and tickets can be bought at vending machines, from bus drivers, ticket officers, or from a mobile app. A Copenhagen Card grants your free transport throughout the city and admission to 60 museums and attractions. There are several wonderful sightseeing tours offered by both bus and by boat. Try the DFDS Canal Tour, which provides a unique hop-on, hop-off self-guided service. Taxis are abundant, but pricey and often have long wait times if you call for a pick up.

Copenhagen is an amazing destination to visit, whether for work or pleasure, and you’ll make the most of our stay when you buy business class flights to Copenhagen. Enjoy the best service and spacious seating on the plane, accompanied by the finest food and drink. You will arrive relaxed, satisfied and full of energy, so whatever you plan to do in this fantastic city, you know you will have an unforgettable voyage.
