Things To Do In Santorini

You will be blown away by the stunning, dramatic views of this famed Greek island when you arrive on business class flights to Santorini. Santorini is a natural wonder of the world and draws many visitors with its breathtaking landscape and its legendary sunsets. Sculpted by ancient volcanic eruptions and forming a caldera, the island is semicircle-shaped, with the postcard-perfect towns of Fira, Oia, and Thirasis perched along the cliffs. Oia is situated in such a way that it offers the best views of the breathtaking sunsets.

One of the first things you’ll want to do on Santorini is visit the Akrotiri, arguably its most important archaeological site. Here you can see the ruins of an ancient Minoan city completely destroyed by a massive volcanic eruption in 1627 BC. Like Pompeii, these ruins were preserved by volcanic ash, so they are in excellent shape and they will give you a little bit of an idea of what life might have been like in ancient Greece. The Classical city Thera is found on Mesa Vouno, where you can also gaze upon Hellenistic and Roman ruins.

Fira and Oia are some of the most renowned towns found in the Cycladic Islands and are perfect examples of architecture typical of these islands. White and pastel buildings and blue-domed churches cover the cliffs of the caldera. Many of the buildings are built into cliff-side caves and are in fact much larger than they look from the outside. There are several interesting museums and galleries to visit in the towns, such as the Museum of Prehistoric Thira, the Archaeological Museum, and the Art Space Gallery and Winery.

For the adventurous traveler, Santorini has a lot to offer. There are five diving facilities where you can rent all the necessary equipment and transportation. Try the Mediterranean Dive Club, Naby’s Waterworld Dive Center, or Aegean Divers. The visibility on these dives is excellent, and sites include caverns, reefs, a shipwreck near the volcano, and wall diving. It’s common to see octopi on wall dives. Be sure to book dives in advance in order to avoid disappointment. There are also many excellent snorkeling locations such as Mesa Pigadia, Perissa Rock, the beach south of Oia, the beach off of Thirasia, and Caldera Beach. Inexpensive snorkeling gear can be purchased on most of the beaches around the island.

Consider having a bite to eat at one of the many local tavernas looking over the caldera, and time it so you can watch the sun set. Local specialties to try include white eggplant dishes, tomato keftedes, dolmades, and fresh grilled fish. Keftides are traditional fried tomato balls that are not to be missed, and don’t forget to try the fresh local cherry tomatoes, too, which have a reputation for being some of the best tasting in the world. Local wine is made from the indigenous Assyrtiko grape, and the Assyrtiko-Santorini wine is legendary. The grapes are grown in some of the world’s most ancient vineyards, which are over 3500 years old, and their unique character is helped in part both by the climate and by the volcanic soil. Other wines to enjoy are Aidani, Athiri, Vinsanto, and Mavrotragano. Wineries are everywhere on this island, and you’ll want to visit at least a few of them, such as Volcan Winery, Santo Wines, Argiros Estate, or Hatzidakis.

Of course, no trip to Santorini would be complete without a long, relaxing afternoon sunning on the beach! There are so many beaches to choose from, each with its own unique characteristics. The Black Beach, Red Beach, Vlychada, Amoudi, Perivolos, Baxedes, and Pori are just some examples. Some of the beaches, such as White Beach, are accessible only by boat. Don’t be surprised if you see women swimming topless, or full-on nudity at Vlychada and Red Beach.

Getting Around Santorini

Santorini has a public transit system that consists of buses. Bus stops are small, white enclosures that may or may not have a bus sign nearby. Buses run infrequently, sometimes only every other hour. There are several companies that offer private services such as Santorini Transport if you would rather not deal with the sometimes over-packed buses (especially in peak tourist season) and reputedly moody bus drivers. Likely the most popular method of getting around Santorini is by renting ATVs, which share the road with all the other vehicles and which are ubiquitous around the island. This is a cost-effective way of exploring the sights and beaches. Cars can also be rented. By car, you can drive from one end of the island to the other in about 50 minutes. However you choose to travel, be extremely cautious, as most drivers on the island are in fact tourists and are likely driving by their own native country’s road conventions!

Santorini is an unforgettable place and for some people, it represents the ideal picture of a perfect holiday destination. When you travel on business class flights to Santorini, whether you are traveling for work or for pleasure, you will experience all of the luxuries and conveniences of premium tickets. You will arrive feeling both relaxed and energized for your time exploring this amazing Greek island.
