Things To Do In Istanbul

When you arrive on business class flights to Istanbul, you will want to head to Sultanahmet, Istanbul’s Old City, which is home to many of the city’s most famous sites. It is located on a peninsula surrounded by water to the north, east, and south, with old city walls to the west, and it consists of what was once the city of Constantinople. The peninsula is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, the Hagia Sofia is an absolute essential stop. When you enter the building, look up to see the magnificent ‘Christ as Pantocrator’ mosaic above the Imperial Door. Through that door is the famous golden-domed main room, which is over-brimming with incredible mosaics, paintings, and historical artifacts. Head upstairs to find the galleries, which are also full of amazing art.

The Topkapi Palace is another important spot to visit in Sultanahmet. It consists of four lavishly decorated courts. As you enter the First Court, you will pass through the Imperial Gate, and on the left you will see the Byzantine church known as Hagia Eirene. The Second Court consists of a series of pavilions, kitchens, kiosks, and sleeping quarters. The next main section of the palace is the Harem, located under the Tower of Justice, west of the Second Court. You need a special ticket to get into the Harem, but it is well worth it. Out of its six floors, containing over 300 rooms, only one floor is open to the public, and it is certainly a fascinating window into the complex social structure of the sultans and concubines. The Third Court contains the sultan’s private rooms, and the Fourth Court features beautiful pleasure gardens, terraces, and decorative pools.

The Blue Mosque is considered one of Istanbul’s most photogenic buildings. It is such a popular attraction that the number of visitors allowed in is limited. Only worshippers may enter through the front door. Tourists must follow the signs to enter through the south door, and are not permitted to enter during the six daily prayer times. The Basilica Cistern, a giant underground structure built in 532, intended to provide water to the city in emergency situations, is another must-see. Near the Basilica Cistern, Blue Mosque, and Hagia Sophia, you will find the Hippodrome, once the center of Roman and Byzantine Constantinople. Also nearby are the splendid Archeology Museums, housing over one million archeological objects, including ancient Sumerian tablets, the Treaty of Kadesh, the Alexander the Great Sarcophagus, and parts of the Ishtar Gate. Next-door to the museum, get some fresh air at Gülhane Park and admire the giant plane trees and lovely tulip beds. Take a well-deserved break at one of the many cafes in the park and enjoy a pot of tea while admiring a magnificent view of the Bosphorus.

Getting Around Istanbul

Istanbul has a transit system that includes buses, a high-speed metro, light rail lines, and ferries. Navigating the system can be difficult, as some of it is city-run and some of it is private, and you will often have to pay multiple times in the span of one journey. There is a fleet of private yellow minivans, known as dolmuş, which follow specific routes and wait until they are full before departing. These run all night, whereas the main public transit lines do not. Tokens for the public transit system can be purchased at kiosks and machines at stops and stations, and only Turkish currency is accepted – no foreign currency or credit cards. If you are staying in the city for more than a day or two after arriving on business class flights to Istanbul, it is a good idea to buy an Istanbulkart. A group of two or more people can all share one card, which can be refilled at designated booths found throughout the network. There are several types of boats that transport passengers across the Bosphorus, and offer great views of the city from the water. Taxis are a good way to get around Istanbul and are fairly inexpensive. Most of the drivers understand some English, so be sure to ask before getting in what their rate is and tell them to turn on the meter. There are countless excellent walking tours of the city that will guide you through many of the main tourist sights. A lot of these tours can be arranged through the hotel you are staying at.

Whether you are traveling for work or for pleasure, your time spent in Istanbul is sure to be memorable. Experienced travelers will always recommend business class flights to Istanbul so you can fully enjoy your trip from the moment you set foot in the airport.
