Things To Do In Bucharest
Romania’s capital and largest city is a booming, exciting place to visit with its countless sights and attractions. You can’t miss the Parliament Palace in the city center near Piaţa Unirii, the Union Plazza. Formerly called Casa Poporului, ‘People’s House’, it is one of the largest administrative buildings in the world, and it is also the heaviest building on the planet! You can take tours that start every half hour that will take you through the incredible marble rooms. Be sure to take the full tour that includes the terrace, which provides fantastic views of the city from the top of the building. Approximately 1/9 of Bucharest was demolished in order to accommodate this massive building. The city’s historical center, however, was relatively unscathed and is a fun, youthful place to walk through, not to mention picturesque with its cobbled streets and 19th-century buildings.
The Romanian Athenaeum is another essential visit when you arrive on business class flights to Bucharest. If you are visiting during the concert season between September and May, you can go see the Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra perform in the impressive hall. The Athenaeum is located near the Revolution Square, which includes a monument in the center dedicated to those who gave their lives fighting in the Romanian Revolution of 1989. Also close by, the historic Kretzulescu church is an extraordinary example of Romanian Brancovenesc style. The church was badly damaged during the revolution but has since been restored.
There are tons of great museums in Bucharest worth checking out. The Museum of the Romanian Peasant focuses on traditional Romanian culture and folklore. The Village Museum is an open-air museum that contains approximately 300 historic buildings fitted with a huge range of furniture, pottery, and clothing representing every region of the country. The Art Museum is housed in the former Royal Palace and has an excellent collection of early European and Romanian art. The National Museum of Contemporary Art is found in the Palace of the Parliament and is worth a visit to get a glimpse of Romania’s thriving art scene.
There are a lot of local specialties in Bucharest for you to purchase and take home. One extremely popular item is the embroidered Romanian blouse, both for men and for women. You can find authentic handmade blouses at shops in the old city center, at the Village Museum gift shop, and at the traditional market that occurs Friday through Sunday at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant. Romanian traditional mugs, carved wooden spoons, and painted eggs are all also beautiful, unique handmade souvenirs for visitors who have taken business class flights to Bucharest.
Romanian food has a reputation for being hearty and incredibly tasty. Mititei is a very popular dish you will see all over Bucharest, made of minced pork, beef and lamb rolled together and grilled. It’s usually eaten with bread and mustard, and you will find it everywhere from open-air markets to upscale dining establishments. Saramura, chiftele, and sarmale are some other excellent traditional meat-based dishes. Vegetarians will love the eggplant-based zacusca spread on bread. For dessert, don’t miss a chance for some Romanian baklava – filo pastry layered with nuts and honey. Romania is the producer of many excellent wines, and some of the best are Fetească, Tămâioasă and Grasă. You’ll definitely want to bring back a bottle or two. For something significantly more alcoholic, Ţuica is a type of plum brandy that has been distilled in Romania for hundreds of years, and vişinata is another specialty made of rachiu, sugar, and cherries.
